Our Growing Process
Great mushrooms start long before they appear in the grow room.
How We Grow
Select Cultures
We carefully select cultures suited to each species we grow.
Prepare Substrate
Nutritious growing substrates designed to give each species what it needs to thrive.
Inoculate
Mushroom blocks are prepared and inoculated with the chosen culture.
Incubate
Blocks are incubated before moving on to a controlled fruiting environment.
Fruit
Humidity, fresh air, temperature and light are carefully managed throughout.
Harvest
Harvested by hand and prepared for sale as fresh as possible.
We carefully select cultures and prepare nutritious growing substrates designed to give each species the conditions it needs to thrive. Our mushroom blocks are prepared, inoculated and incubated before being moved into controlled fruiting environments where humidity, fresh air, temperature and light are carefully managed.
Once the mushrooms are ready, they’re harvested by hand and prepared for sale as fresh as possible.
The Collective
But Urban Farming Collective is more than just our own farm. We’ve built a network of small independent mushroom growers who we support through our collective. By working together, we can offer an incredible variety of professionally grown gourmet mushrooms while supporting other local growers and small businesses.
This collective approach gives our customers access to one of the best ranges of locally grown specialty mushrooms in Melbourne, if not Australia.
Quality is important at every stage, whether mushrooms are grown by us or one of the independent growers within our network.
We also believe the process shouldn’t end with the harvest. We’re continually exploring ways to reuse spent mushroom substrate, reduce waste and turn what would traditionally be discarded into something useful.
